If you’re planning on getting a wedding cake, here are just a few really simple tips.
If you’re going to put your cake on a cake stand, a common mistake I see is getting the size of the cake to find the right size cake stand. What you actually need is the size of the bottom cake board. The cake board is the board that goes under the cake for support and so the cake can be easily moved and it is usually just a little bit bigger than the cake. You can ask your baker for that dimension. This way your cake stand will be just the right size.
In my opinion, if you’re having a three tier or higher cake, you don’t need a cake stand. It usually doesn’t need to be any higher than that. You can always ask your baker for their recommendation, but I find it does just fine on its own.
If you are getting fresh floral to decorate the cake, you need to figure out who is going to be placing that fresh floral. Will it be the florist, the baker...? Usually bakers don’t do that, but sometimes they will, and sometimes one of them has to leave before the other arrives, so make sure you find out ahead of time who will be placing the florals on the cake.
Ask your baker about storage and refrigeration. Does the cake need to be refrigerated until it's time for the cake cutting? Will it be okay at room temperature? Outside in the heat? Some frosting might melt in the hot sun but be okay in the shade, some might need refrigeration until you are ready to serve it. Ask you baker for their recommendation and ensure you have access to a fridge big enough if you need one.
Happy wedding planning!
